River Tracing at MaSu River 瑪鋉溪溯溪* River Tracing Skills Training ~ 2013/8/18 (Sun.)
Limit: 14 people

★ Registration deadline: 2013/8/7 (Wednesday)

MaSu River is at Wanli, Taipei. It is famous for its continuous waterfalls, deep ponds, and gorge. It is a very interesting river for river tracing. In addition, the various terrains make this river a great place for river tracing training.
We will learn many river tracing skills during our trip: climbing waterfalls, swimming through deep ponds, rappelling, belaying, equipment usage, and knot skills. These river tracing skills are also very useful for passing cliffs or streams while hiking.

Holy Ridge introduction:
Connecting Main Peak of Xue Mountain and Dabajian Mountain, Shengleng Trail (Holy Ridge Trail) is over 3,100 meters, even over 3,580 meters between Main Peak and North Peak of Xue Mountain. There are many jagged, rugged rocks and steep, cliffy escarpments along the trail. Those who love mountain climbing have to overcome all difficulties with feat and trepidation, then able to finish this significant ridge. As an old saying in the mountain climbing realm goes, “those who finish Shengleng Trail (Holy Ridge Trail) are qualified to get married.” It means only when a young man breaks through all difficulties along this trail can he shoulder the responsibility of having a family.

Shengleng Trail (Holy Ridge Trail) was first described in an article written by a Japanese climber in 1928 and was named after the publication of the article. Moreover, it was first conquered in 1931 by a team of mountaineers with the help of ropes.

As time flies, more and more teams tried to climb Shengleng Trail (Holy Ridge Trail), resulting in a clear passage already. Many other mountain climbing activities held in the 60s, 70s, and 80s even attracted more crowds to step on this trail. Till now, the traditional route of Shengleng Trail (Holy Ridge Trail)—from Dabajian Mountain to Main Peak of Xue Mountain—cannot satisfy dedicated alpinists any more. Some of them, therefore, extend the route by including that of Wuling Quadruple Mountains, arranging “Shengling Y-shaped Trail” “Shengling O-shaped Trail.” Shengling Y-shaped Trail starts from Wuling Farm, across Tao Mountain, Kalahei Mountain, Chihyou Mountain, and Pintian Mountain, keep walking along Takejin Creek to pass Banan, go to Daba Peaks and back with a light pact, and follow the traditional route of Shengleng Trail (Holy Ridge Trail) to mount Main Peak of Xue Mountain. Shengling O-shaped Trail also starts from Wuling Quadruple Mountains, descends from Pintian Cliff on the west side of Pintian Mountain, and gets to the traditional route of Shengleng Trail (Holy Ridge Trail) by Buxiulan Mountain. These various choices make this trail the most popular route to approach Xue Mountain Range.

Hiking High Mountain in Taiwan with 523: 2013/5/22 (Wed.) ~5/26 (Sun.) Nanhu Mountain~ Flower Season(南湖大山花季)

★ Hiking High Mountain in Taiwan with 523: 2013/5/22 (Wed.) ~5/26 (Sun.) Nanhu Mountain~ Flower Season(南湖大山花季)

★ Deadline to register:2013/4/19 (Friday) or when fully booked (Limited: 10 persons)

Nanhu Mountain is 3,742 meters high and the highest peak in the Central Mountain Range. It is also one of the Five Mountains of Taiwan.
Its most well-known characteristic is the cirque, which is circled by two ridges, one reaching from the north peak to the northeast peak and the other from the east peak to the summit. It is generally believed to be a cirque left over from the last ice age.

In Nanhu, flora mainly includes alpine tundra ecosystems and coniferous forest ecosystems. Unique plants commonly seen here are Juniperus squamata, alpine azalea, and hemlock. Old growth forests cover most of this area, making an ideal living environment for mammals. As a result, a wide variety of mammals live in the area between Nanhu Mountain and Central Range Point, including Formosan rock monkeys, muntjacs, white-headed flying squirrels, alpine accentors, and Formosan laughing thrushes.

In late May, flowers bloom everywhere in Nanhu Mountain. Let’s go to enjoy the most beautiful flower season in Taiwan’s High Montains!

Hiking High Mountain in Taiwan with 523: 2013/6/20 (Thu.) ~ 6/23 (Sun.) Chilai Main and North Peaks(奇萊主北)

★ Hiking High Mountain in Taiwan with 523: 2013/6/20 (Thu.) ~ 6/23 (Sun.)
Chilai Main and North Peaks(奇萊主北)

★ Deadline to register:2013/5/15 (Wednesday) or when fully booked (Limited: 10 persons)

Chilai is in the center of Central Mountain Range. Although a visit of the Chilai North Peak does not require any difficult climbing, many hikers have got into trouble on the mountain over the years. The mountain’s dangerous reputation together with the dark color of its rocks has given it the name “Black Chilai”. However, most accidents on the mountain have happened due inadequate regard for safety and a lack of basic knowledge of the area.
Chilai North Peak is one of the “10 jun” (or steep mountain) in the list of Taiwan’s highest 100 peaks. On one side of Chilai North Peak lie beautiful grasslands, and on the other magnificent black cliffs. Chilai is definitely worth a visit, where you will definitely leave with unforgettable memory in life.

Hiking in Taiwan with 523: 2013/5/31 (Fri.) ~ 6/2 (Sun.) Follow Hunters, Hapenzhongling Cross Road (哈盆中嶺越嶺道)

★ Hiking with 523: 2013/5/31 (Fri.) ~ 6/2 (Sun.)
Follow Hunters, Hapenzhongling Cross Road (哈盆中嶺越嶺道)

★ Deadline to register:2013/5/15 (Wednesday) or when fully booked (Limited: 10 persons)
報名截止日: 2013/5/15 (三)

Hapenzhongling Cross Road (哈盆中嶺越嶺道) was historically, during the Japanese occupation, a route for the army and local aboriginals, many who traversed this road via horses. The Road goes from Fushan Village, Wulai, through Hapen tribe to Lunpi Village. Along the trial, there are historical remains: old Hapen tribe, canon fort, checkpoint, police office, and various other cultural traces. Along the Hapen creek, one can see everywhere marks and footprints of wild pigs; as there is rich and plentiful evidence to witness the biological diversity along this route. At the tribe village, banana trees grow abundantly. Formosa Monkeys are regular guests here too.

AShong, who is the son of a forest mountain and the disciple of the Atayal hunter, will lead us into a Hapen area called "Taiwanese Amazon" to experience and learn a whole new world: the interaction between aborigines and nature. We will experience the history between Atayal ancestors and the Japanese and visit historical sites. We will also enter the world of a true hunter, a world you have never seen before.

During the hike, Hunter AShong will be our teacher and the Hapen area will be our classroom. Besides the hunter’s interpretation and demonstration along the trail, we will learn his teachings by practice. Consequently, groups will be assigned real tasks to perform, whether it is building a hunting hut, setting up a tent, gathering wild vegetables, cutting firewood, cooking meals and so on. Besides learning how to be an aboriginal hunter and learning the wisdom of survival amongst the wild land, we will have a group discussion to share with each other concepts and thoughts about the “Leave No Trace” movement and about environmental ethics.

Yushan Main Peak, 3952 meters, is the highest mountain in Taiwan. Also, it is the highest top in North Eastern Asia. Among Taiwanese Hundred Mountains, Yushan, Xueshan, Xiogulunshan, Nanhudashan and Beidawushan are the most representative mountains in Taiwan. Physical strength and endurance are basic. Besides, group training is necessary. Participators should offer your Training Plan and experience pictures above 3000m (more is better).
